Definition of lower income householdsDIVISION 31. HOUSING AND HOME FINANCE › PART 1. STATE HOUSING POLICY AND GENERAL PROVISIONS › CHAPTER 2. Definitions

Key provisions · Claude summary, not statute text

Defines “lower income households” by reference to the federal Section 8 lower income limits, with a state limit of 80 percent of area median income if those standards are discontinued.

  • Federal limits. Lower income households are persons and families whose income does not exceed the qualifying limits for lower income families under Section 8 of the United States Housing Act of 1937, published by the department in the California Code of Regulations as soon as possible after federal adoption. (a)
  • State fallback. If the federal standards are discontinued, the department establishes limits by regulation for all areas of the state at 80 percent of area median income, adjusted for family size and revised annually. (a)
  • Included households. The term includes very low income households (§ 50105) and extremely low income households (§ 50106); this subdivision is declaratory of existing law. (b)
  • Area median income. “Area median income” means the median family income of a geographic area of the state. (c)
